The latest trailer for Captain Marvel showed us a lot of new things and some interesting confirmed characters for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. As most people know, the movie will see Carol Danvers’ history with the Kree, her past life on Earth, why she was gone when Earth needed her the most, and what looks like a huge part of the Kree-Skrull War play out on the big screen for the first time.
However, along with all pf that, there will be appearances from a pre-eye patch Nick Fury, a young Agent Coulson, a bunch of familiar faces of Kree warriors for fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and some characters who could be wonderful Easter eggs. We also expect to see a few more cameos — although none of them have been confirmed yet — and some stingers after the movie that will explore Captain Marvel’s major role in the Avengers 4 movie.
With so many characters already introduced in the trailers and promo material, and at least one character who was revealed to be very different than originally believed, here is a look at the 10 Characters Confirmed To Appear In Captain Marvel (And 10 We Want To See).
20 Confirmed: NICK FURY
One of the first characters confirmed to appear in the Captain Marvel movie was Nick Fury. It was surprising to see him appear in the trailers, both without his eye patch as well as de-aged tremendously. It is amazing what digital effects can accomplish when it comes to making someone like Samuel L. Jackson look like he did over two decades ago.
Captain Marvel takes place in 1995. According to the trailers, Fury was about to leave everything before he met Captain Marvel and learned that there was life in outer space. Part of the fun of watching the Captain Marvel trailers is seeing a younger Nick Fury who was not yet the hardened leader in The Avengers.
19 Want to see: PEGGY CARTER
Captain Marvel takes place in 1995, which is four years after the passing of Howard Stark. Peggy Carter helped start S.H.I.E.L.D., as shown in her own ABC series, and was still around when Hank Pym quit in 1989 after he learned that they were still trying to use his Pym Particles without his permission.
Peggy Carter was still a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. until sometime before 2012 when she retired due to her age and battle with Alzheimer’s disease. This means that she was still in a high position in the organization in 1995. It would be great to see Haley Atwell return — even if it’s just for a cameo — as the first strong female hero in the MCU. It would almost be like she is passing of the torch to Carol Danvers.
18 Confirmed: AGENT COULSON
Along with Nick Fury, Agent Phil Coulson will also be making a return to the big screen in Captain Marvel. This is Coulson’s first appearance in a movie for Marvel since the first Avengers film, although his story did continue on the ABC series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Coulson is 31 years old at the time of Captain Marvel, so considering the fact that he was recruited to S.H.I.E.L.D. directly out of college, he has only been with them for a short time, working under Nick Fury. In an interview, actor Clark Gregg said that his character is still new to S.H.I.E.L.D. at the time of Captain Marvel since it takes place 10 years before Iron Man.
17 Want to see: MAR-VELL
When the first Captain Marvel trailer came out, many fans believed that Jude Law was playing Mar-Vell — the hero who Carol Danvers receives her powers from. However, this turned out to be inaccurate, as Law will be playing a completely different character in the movie. However, there are now concerns that the movie will not feature Mar-Vell at all.
This would be a shame. HA Captain Marvel origin story for Carol would not work as well without Mar-Vell and would likely mean that the MCU might completely change how she receives her powers. A good way around this would be to have Mar-Vell appear on Earth when Carol is a child. For now, thoough, we only know that Mar-Vell is an almost mythical figure to the Kree.
16 (Probably) Confirmed: YON-ROGG
When the Captain Marvel trailers and promotional photos first came out, many fans assumed that Jude Law was playing Mar-Vell in the movie. However, the real identity of his character has since been revealed. Instead of Mar-Vell, Law seems to be playing Yon-Rogg. If the movie stays true to the comics, he will end up as a villains in the movie.
In the comics, Yon-Rogg sent Mar-Vell to Earth to figure out how a culture so primitive could stop a Kree Sentinel. Over time, jealousy caused Yon-Rogg to hate Mar-Vell and he soon set out to eliminate his rival. It was Yon-Rogg who abducted Carol Danvers and was responsible for her gaining her powers. We can only wonder if this will play out as Danvers’ memory returns in the movie.
15 Want to see: CULL OBSIDIAN
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos sent a team to start the invasion on Earth before he showed up. Among them was one of his most trusted soldiers — Cull Obsidian. When eagle-eyed Marvel Comics fans first saw Cull, they noticed something very interesting about the warrior.
If you look very closely at Cull Obsidian’s waist when he faces Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong, and Bruce Banner in the streets of Greenwich, you will notice that there is a gold, blue, and red sash around him. These are clearly the colors of Captain Marvel’s costume. Many fans believe that this is a significant detail. It also makes us wonder if Thanos sent his team to Kree airspace during his journey to cleanse the universe. After all, Thanos does have a connection with two of the Kree warriors who appear in Captain Marvel.
14 Confirmed: RONAN THE ACCUSER
The last time that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw Ronan the Accuser, he was trying to destroy the planet of Xandar in order to seek vengeance against the Nova Corps. Thankfully, he Guardians of the Galaxy stopped and eliminated him. However, since this is a prequel that takes place over a decade before the events of that movie, Ronan is back.
This makes sense. In the trailers, we see Captain Marvel working for the Kree army. There is one scene that shows Carol Danvers and her team walking by Ronan, who is standing with his Cosmi-Rod. While the movie will depict the Kree-Skrull War, Ronan was always interested in returning to battle the Nova Corps, and in the comics, he sabotaged many missions involving Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg in his efforts to take control.
13 Want to see: NOVA PRIME
With the Kree-Skrull War taking place during the Captain Marvel movie, it makes sense that the Nova Corps might make an appearance. The Kree-Nova War took place long before the battle with the Skrulls, and the Nova Corps — as an intergalactic police force — would have known about the conflict.
While there are a number of Nova Corps members who could return for a cameo in Captain Marvel, the one member who seems like the best bet is Nova Prime. Glenn Close was wonderful in her role in Guardians of the Galaxy and would be a welcome back in Captain Marvel. We’d also love to see an appearance by Richard Ryder, but we won’t hold our breath on that one.
12 Confirmed: KORATH
When taking a close look at Carol Danvers’ team in the Captain Marvel trailer, the one figure who stands out for all Marvel Cinematic Universe fans is Korath. He, of course, was a major antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy, the right-hand man to Ronan the Accuser during his attempts at destroying Xandar. He was also the first bad guy shown in the movie, as he tried to capture Peter Quill.
In Captain Marvel, it is clear that he is a member of the Kree Army and is working alongside Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg. It’s interesting to note, though, that Korath was trained alongside Gamora and Nebula as a child by Thanos, so sometime after that training and this movie, he joined the Kree Army before eventually leaving to help Ronan on his quest.
11 Want to see: THANOS
Thanos has his fingers all over the Captain Marvel movie — at least when it comes to the framing devices. There are appearances of Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer — both of whom serve under Thanos in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. There is the fact that Thanos’s soldier Cull Obsidian had a sash that was the colors of Captain Marvel’s costume in Avengers: Infinity War.
There is also the fact that the movie is going to lead directly into Avengers 4, and the expected arrival of Captain Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current timeline to help try to reverse the devastation that was caused by Thanos. Because of this, we certainly hope that Thanos will appear somewhere in Captain Marvel.
10 Confirmed: BRON-CHAR
The Captain Marvel trailer shows us a scene in which Carol Danvers walks by Ronan the Accuser with her fellow Kree soldiers behind her. It is easy to recognize certain characters, such as Jude Law’s Yon-Rogg and Korath. However, the other figures aren’t as obvious.
The bearded man directly behind Captain Marvel is Bron-Char. He is a member of the Starforce of the Kree Army. He is also from the comics, where he was an agent serving the Lunatic Legion during a Kree invasion of Earth. This grooup had two main goals — the first was seeking racial pureblood dominance, which led to their second goal of destroying Mar-Vell. This makes it seem like his loyalty lies with Yon-Rogg if his story remains true to the comics. The Lunatic Legion was directly responsible for the event that led to Mar-Vell’s cancer in the comics.
9 Want to see: S.W.O.R.D.
In the first Thor movie, Eric Selvig and Jane Foster received a lot of equipment from S.H.I.E.L.D. to continue their research. Selvig brings up another super-secret organization called S.W.O.R.D. This excited many Marvel Comics fans because this was the first moment that the MCU hinted at the cosmic world that Guardians of the Galaxy finally introduced years later.
If Captain Marvel was betrayed by the Kree Army, which seems to be where the movie is heading, then where has she been for the last 20 years? The most obvious answer, and the reason whhy Nick Fury had a communicator to call her at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, might be that she was working off Earth, for S.W.O.R.D., another secret organization that Fury has kept hidden from the world.
8 Confirmed: MINN-ERVA
The final person walking behind Captain Marvel in the trailer with the Kree Army is Min-Erva. As seen in the trailer, she is lugging around some major firepower and that is because she is the expert marksman for the Starforce. In the comic books, she had a complicated backstory that likely will not play into her role in the movie.
In the comics, she came to Earth seeking out Mar-Vell. Unlike other Kree warriors like Bron-Char and Yon-Rogg, Minn-Erva wanted to find Mar-Vell and mate with him. Her entire goal was to have a baby to gain access to his altered genes to help progress the Kree genetic code. In the movie, it seems like Minn-Erva is not happy working with Carol Danvers, as she sees her as a threat to her spot in the Starforce.
7 Want to see: ADAM WARLOCK
Both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies featured Easter eggs hinting at Adam Warlock. In the first movie, we saw the Collector’s museum where a birth pod was spotted. However, director James Gunn said that it was a birth pod — but it was not Adam Warlock. Then, in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, a post-credit stinger involved Ayesha near a birth pod, with her saying that she would call her creation Adam.
Now, fans of the comic books know that Adam Warlock played a huge role in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline and he is the one who defeated Thanos in the end. However, it seems like Doctor Strange took his role in Infinity War. Now, if Adam Warlock is to play a role in the cosmic universe, it is a good time to actually introduce him — if nowhere else than with a stinger in the credits.
6 Confirmed: TALOS
While there is a lot of speculation about what will happen to Captain Marvel when it comes to the Kree and how she will fall from grace, the main focus of the movie seems to be based on the Kree-Skrull War. In that aspect, Talos has been confirmed to appear in the movie as part of the Skrull invasion of Earth while posing as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Now, this is a huge change from the comic books. In the comics, Talos was a Skrull who was not capable of shapeshifting, so if he is posing as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, this means that his powers are the same as other Skrulls. He was one of the fiercest Skrull warriors in the comics, so we expect him to lead the charge against the Kree and Captain Marvel.
5 Want to see: ANT-MAN
Getting into the actual stingers, there is one that just has to appear after Captain Marvel. Probably the most disappointing thing to happen in Ant-Man & The Wasp came when Hank and Janet Pym were finally reunited and brought their family with Hope back together. Then, in the post-credit stinger, they were turned to dust as part of Thanos’ plan. It was a happy ending that was immediately undone.
However, the interesting thing was that Ant-Man was trapped in the Quantum Realm. One wonders how Ant-Man will get back to Earth before he goes insane since no one knows that he is there. The trailer shows that Carol can call her power from an inter-dimensional breach — and that might be the Quantum Realm. If Carol finds Scott and saves him in the stinger, this will immediately set up Avengers 4.
4 Confirmed: KREE SCIENTIST
There is a massive star in Captain Marvel and she doesn’t even have a name yet. She is portrayed by Anette Bening, a four-time Oscar-nominated actress, and she appears to be playing a scientist. Now, it is important to note that if she is a Kree scientist, there is one distinctive trait that will keep her unique — she is not blue-skinned. Since some Kree soldiers like Bron-Char believe that pure blood is important, this could also put her in danger.
Her addition is similar to the additions of Robert Redford (who was a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. leader-turned-traitor) and Glenn Close (who was the head of the Nova Corps). Her part could be very important but only in a smaller role. She seems to be the one who turned Carol into Captain Marvel based on the trailer, and there is no comic book counterpart for that role.
3 Want to see: GAMORA
The last time that Marvel fans saw Gamora, Thanos was chunking her off a giant cliff to get the Soul Stone. There was also a moment at the end of the movie in which Gamora’s soul showed up to ask Thanos if he had accomplished his goals. At this point, it seemed that she had accepted her fate and was ready to move on. However, she was sacrificed to the Soul Stone and she might not be gone yet.
When it comes to appearing in Captain Marvel, it is important to understand the scene where she fell to her fate. It took place on a planet that no one had seen in the MCU yet called Vormir. However, it could tie into Captain Marvel — Vormir is in Kree airspace.
2 Confirmed: MARIA RAMBEAU
In the most recent Captain Marvel trailer, there was a closer shot of Carol Danvers getting into a fighter jet while she was still on Earth. The name on the jet next to Carol’s belongs to another pilot named Maria Rambeau. Her nickname is Photon, and according to actress Lashana Lynch, she is a strong character who is thrown into battles that she knows nothing about but is always ready to help.
So, who is Maria Rambeau? She is the single mother of Monica Rambeau, which ties into the comic books. Monica is the superhero known as Spectrum, although she was also known as Photon and Pulsar. She also served as a Captain Marvel at one point when she was part of the Avengers.
1 Want to see: ROCKET RACCOON
There is little chance that fans will get to see Rocket Raccoon in Captain Marvel. However, if it did happen — maybe in a post-credit stinger — it could be great fun for fans of Marvel Comics. The original Captain Marvel poster had a cat’s tail at the bottom and most comic book fans knew who the cat was. In the new trailer, we see Nick Fury petting Chewie and loving every moment.
In the movie, the cat is named Goose. However, anyone who followed Captain Marvel in the comics knows that her cat is named Chewie and that she isn’t a real cat. Instead, she is a Flerken — an alien species that looks like a cat but has some gnarly powers. However, if there is one character in the Marvel Universe who hates Ferkens, it is Rocket Raccoon, who wanted to eliminate Chewie the first time he saw her.
